The finish line?
Well, here we are, just a few hours away from Brandon's scheduled 'graduation' appointment. Today he will attempt to eat 24 peanuts in one sitting. 🥜
24.
😳
We're going to make it similar to a "Day 1" of OIT experience for him, and not attempt to do all 24 all at once. He's currently dosing every day with 12 peanuts, so his first dose today will be 16 peanuts. If all goes well with 16, he'll eat 4 more after 30 minutes (to get to 20 peanuts) and then 4 final peanuts 30 minutes later, to get to 24. He isn't comfortable with the big jump in doubling his current dose at all once, but his doctor said she feels comfortable with him trying it all in one day, so we settled on this method to satisfy everyone. 😊
Why does he have to eat 24 peanuts? Per his doctor's protocol, he has to be able to consume 3x's what will be his maintenance dose, in case of over-exposure while in maintenance. 'Maintenance dose' is another term for the dose he will continue to eat every day, post-graduation, so that his body continues to remember that peanuts are okay. 👍 With his doctor, 8 peanuts is the daily desired maintenance dose, so 8 x 3 = 24. He will have to continue to dose daily for a few years at least. Just because he 'graduates,' doesn't mean that he stops eating peanuts. What it does mean is that he doesn't have to go into his doctor regularly any longer and he can dose at home at a lower daily dose, both of which give him a bit more freedom.

And now, a note to Brandon . . . . .
Here we are bud! On the verge of finishing this thing off! Can you believe it? Over 500 days ago, we thought this would take about 6 months to do. And here we are, almost 18 months later, facing the final hurdle for you. I know none of us would have ever imagined the journey to be like this. But to be honest, I wouldn't trade it. I know we've talked about this - probably ad nauseam, in your opinion 😉 - but to see how you have grown as a person during this journey is something I would never trade away. You have fought with your heart and soul to get to this day. I know there are days where you've wanted to give up, throw in the towel, and just go back to avoidance of peanuts. I know you have sacrificed your time, activities you've wanted to do, and have had to say 'no' to things because of going through OIT. As a pre-teen boy (when we started) and now a full fledged teenager, you could choose to be doing many other things with your time, but you decided this was worth the sacrifice. Your dedication to this is seriously unparalleled. I don't know anyone who has done something positive for their health for over 500 days and never missed a day. Never missed. Seriously. You are a champion already, no matter how today goes. You've won battles over yourself that many adults only wish they could win - battles of the will, battles over fears, battles of dedication, battles of commitment. You are a warrior, Brandon, and Dad and I could not be more proud of you. Now go tackle those 24 peanuts and show them who's boss. 💪🥜 Go teal turtle!!! 🐢 💚
