Turning a corner?
To say the summer was long and challenging from an OIT perspective would be an understatement.
🥜 Less than a month in to OIT and we had to use epinephrine on Brandon when his throat started closing up in office on an updose.
🥜 From there we inched up to our next dose - literally. We started the summer on "dose 7," and we didn't attempt "dose 8" until the end of July
🥜 We had a series of updoses and downdoses throughout the rest of the summer, and we didn't graduate from dose 8 until just last week - so another 7 weeks.
Just to give you a bit of perspective, it usually takes people 1-2 weeks to graduate from dose to dose. It took us about 14 weeks to successfully graduate 2 doses. 😮 At first, our slow pace really bothered me. Brandon and I both are 'go getters' and wanted to walk into this situation (OIT) and just knock it out. No muss, no fuss, we're here for business, let's get on with it.
Wellllllll, that's not quite how it's going for us. God is really teaching me through this that HE is the one in control of everything, not me. Darn, right?? 😉 Doesn't He even want just a little bit of my input?? 😊 So, we're taking this as a lesson in releasing control, and letting it happen as Brandon's body can accept it.
And so, we had two successful updose appointments, spaced two weeks apart, at the end of August and the beginning of September! Yesss!!! We hardly knew what to do with ourselves to be honest! And to add to our excitement, both of the updoses have been given - and accepted by his body - withOUT antihistamines! That's a HUGE step too! 🙌🌟 That means that his body is maybe starting to get the hang of this whole process!
On 8/29, he successfully re-updosed to our nemesis dose 8, and then on 9/12, he successfully updosed for the first time to dose 9! I know that's all Greek to most of you, but it means that he jumped up in the concentration of the dose he's taking every day and he didn't have to 'half dose' to get there! Right now, he takes 1 mL of a solution containing 2.5 mg/mL of peanut flour. It's called "Solution D." We joke that he could order a Blizzard at Dairy Queen and ask for it to contain Reese's, as long as it doesn't have more than 2.5 mg/mL of peanut flour in it. 😂 Hey, we have to joke along this journey to make it through!
His fatigue has also been decreasing a bit recently, so that's a HUGE plus. We feel like we're back to normal 'start of middle school/pre-teen' tiredness. We can handle that! 😉
I've had a few people ask me if we're going to continue on with OIT since it's going sooo slowly and Brandon has had to have a shot of epinephrine once. For now, the answer is yes, we are going to continue. 👍 This journey has been much harder than any of us anticipated - physically, emotionally, mentally - but we still feel that the end goal is totally worth it. 🥜 (I plan on doing a blog post just about the different ways OIT impacts us as a family - the list is long and quite different than I originally anticipated it would be!) If at any time Brandon says 'stop,' we will prayerfully consider it, consult with his doctor, and then make a decision. We are by no means forcing him to do this. He is willingly participating and making the sacrifices it takes to 'do OIT.' Anything really worth having is worth a fight, right? So on ward we go, fighting with all we have every step of the way, and soaking up this 'smooth patch' we are currently in.
A fellow OIT momma shared this graphic with me on a post about one of Brandon's updoses. It couldn't be more appropriate! Success for us will be free eating of peanuts . . . . how we get there still remains to be seen. But we'll take it one day at a time!
Until next time,
